Twitter is one of those entities that can be whatever you want it to be, so the question of can you make money with Twitter? provides a simple answer of “Yes” if you do things right. It may be of course, that you simply feel inspired to reveal your latest activities to the world and literally respond to Twitter’s question of “What are you doing now?” but if you want to take things down a different path and apply it as a constructive marketing application, you can. Mind you, there are plenty of people who consider Twitter to be a means of time wasting, but that is the whole point. Twitter is what you make it. You “own” your little piece of it.
Let’s focus on responding to the question of making money with Twitter though. Some will say build a huge list of “followers” (people who become part of your Twitter circle of contacts). To an extent, that would indeed be a wise move, but first consider the nature of such followers. As a marketer, you need potential buyers, so you need to ensure their listed interests can be associated with what you have to offer. You cannot afford to be complacent as to who is following you.
It should be understood however, making money on Twitter is no walkover. There is so much spam about that your worthy project could easily get buried. Another reason to ensure you have appropriate followers and furthermore, that your 140 characters (the maximum you can enter) are created to answer the question “What are you doing?” rather than simply be an advertisement.
Twitter is an area of cyberspace that grabs attention in real time, in terms of
monitization, it has huge potential, but it is yet in it’s infancy – perhaps on the verge of becoming a huge monitization success. At this point in time, many writers will fill the blogs with negative comments and some of them might well be valid at the time they were written, but taking steps to make money with Twitter is a pioneering action. There will be failed attempts along the way, but some WILL get through and establish a marketing settlement somewhere out there in the wild. Just like early pioneeers, the way to get through is to have determination, grit ones teeth, put setbacks behind you and focus on doing what you set out to do and make that income. Make personalization a feature. Be
human in your comments and be responsive to the needs and comments of your followers.
Taking a slightly different viewpoint, making money with Twitter need not be the only focus. It may also be considered as a valuable opportunity to promote your business in terms of public relations and business commu?nications.
As a parting thought, just consider direct mail and do a comparison. In direct mail you will often come across full page advertisements that shout the details of the product and they are successful. In cyberspace we have webpages to do the same thing. Direct mail also offers very successful classified advertisements. In cyberspace we have webpages that carry classified advertising and if done correctly, Twitter can also take on the same role. So can Twitter make you money? Oh yes. You just need to figure out the what, how and when.
